Why is Nigeria’s population exploding? Watch Associate Professor C.K. Ajaero’s explanations on Wazobia Max TV.
Associate Professor Chukwuedozie K. Ajaero is a Population Geography expert at the Department of Geography, University of Nigeria. He has MSc and PhD in Population Geography from the University of Nigeria and did his Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg South Africa. He has taught and researched Population Geography for over a decade. In this interview on Wazobia Max TV, Professor Ajaero explained that reasons Nigeria’s population is increasing intensely are connected with poverty, education and awareness, improvement in health care and cultural and religious beliefs.
He noted that there is a positive relationship between poverty and high fertility which increases population size. Poverty decreases the level of access to education and information available to the population on family planning and birth controls. Migration is another factor he identified, people from the West Africa sub-region easily gain access into the country. Improvement in health care has also led to increase in population as the life expectancy rate has improved from 47 to 61 years in the last decade. Watch the video above to see other ideas he shared including how to manage the population through equitable resources distribution and increasing the human resources potentials of the country by increasing the values of the people through education and skills acquisition and development.
